Recovery Residence or “Michael’s House” is the first men’s recovery residence in the St. John Valley. Located in Fort Kent, Maine, it offers a safe, structured, and supportive environment for adult men in early to sustained recovery from substance use disorder.
Our residence is rooted in peer-led, trauma-informed recovery principles and is designed to promote holistic healing and community reintegration. With close proximity to the 1st Mile Recovery Center, UMFK, Northern Maine Medical Center, and recreational areas like Lonesome Pine Trails and the Fort Kent Outdoor Center, residents have access to a broad network of support for education, wellness, and employment.
At Michael’s House, residents benefit from a comprehensive support system designed to promote accountability, personal growth, and long-term recovery. From on-site management and individualized coaching to structured daily routines and shared living spaces, every aspect of the residence is built to foster a safe, recovery-focused environment.
The House Manager lives on-site and ensures a safe, structured environment by overseeing day-to-day operations, conducting house meetings and inspections, and enforcing policies. They are also available to assist with resident intake, orientation, and referrals.
Each resident is paired with a Recovery Coach who works one-on-one to set personal goals, provide encouragement, and help with practical needs like job applications, transportation, and resume building. Monthly workshops and weekly support groups at the 1st Mile Recovery Center are also available.

Michael’s House offers shared bedrooms in a home-like setting, along with access to a kitchen, laundry, living space, and designated smoking areas. Bedrooms are assigned at intake and are expected to meet high standards of cleanliness. Residents follow a structured three-stage program with increasing privileges and are required to attend at least five recovery activities each week, participate in 20 hours of self-betterment such as work, education, or volunteering, and take responsibility for household chores and maintaining common areas.

Michael's Active Recovery is certified by the Maine Association of Recovery Residences (MARR) and meets the Level II Certification Standards of the National Alliance of Recovery Residences. This certification ensures we maintain the highest standards for quality, safety, and ethical operation in supporting individuals on their recovery journey.
Compared to independent living, residents benefit from a supportive environment in which many have achieved milestones, such as steady employment, financial literacy, educational advancement, and stronger recovery networks. Benefits include:
